The Town Council
The Town of Beresford Council is comprised of five councillors and a mayor.

Anyone can attend the Town of Beresford Council public meetings. Citizens wishing to address council or to bring forth a concern must register before the previous Friday to be added to any given week’s agenda. You can submit your request by email at info@beresford.ca or by phone at (506) 542-2727.

Role of the Council
All candidates for the office of mayor or councilor shall be elected by eligible voters throughout the community. All eligible voters may vote for candidates of their choice running for assigned council seats and for the office of Mayor. Seats on the Board shall be awarded to the candidates who receive the highest number of votes. The mayor and councillors are responsible for and must act on the issues and concerns of their entire community.
Mayor
Duties and Responsibilities of the Mayor
The Local Governance Act 48 (1) outlines, in general terms, the roles and responsibilities of the Mayor :
- Preside at all meetings of council, except as provided for otherwise in a procedural by-law
- Provide leadership to council;
- Communicate information and recommend actions to council for the improvement of the local government’s finances, administration and government ;
- speak on issues of concern to the local government on behalf of council, and;
- Perform any other duties conferred on him or her by this or any other Act or by council. The mayor of a local government shall:
Note that in Beresford, the mayor only votes in the event of a tie between the votes of other council members.
Deputy Mayor
Duties and responsibilities of the Deputy Mayor:
The deputy mayor is a town councillor elected each year by the town council to act as deputy mayor when the mayor is unable to perform his or her duties or in the event that the seat is vacant.

Duties and responsibilities of the City Councillor
The Local Governance Act outlines, in general terms, the roles and responsibilities of councillors: Section 48(6)
A councillor of a local government shall:
- Consider the welfare and interests of the entire local government when making decisions;
- Bring to the attention of council matters that may promote the welfare or interests of the local government ;
- Participate in developing and evaluating the policies and programs of the local government
- Participate in meetings of council, council committees and any other body to which he or she is appointed by council, and
- Perform any other duties conferred on him or her by this or any other Act or by council.
